In 1996, the Illinois General Assembly passed a law allowing the
establishment of charter schools in Illinois. At that time, the
City of Chicago was limited to 15, the Chicago suburbs were
limited to 15, and the rest of the State was limited to 15 - for
a total of 45.
In 2003, as part of an agreement between the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools, the General Assembly passed a law which lifted the cap on charter public schools to the current limit of 30 in Chicago. As part of the agreement, the original 15 charter schools confirmed their right to replicate, while the new 15 charters were limited to one campus. This change was supported by the unions, the City, and Chicago Public Schools. Charter public schools currently operating in Chicago have now grown to 30, filling the cap set by the General Assembly in 2003. |
