According to the National Cancer Institute, there were 192 370 new cases of breast cancer among women and 1910 cases in men in 2009. This year, 40 170 men and 440 women died of breast cancer. The World Health Organization reports that breast cancer accounts for 16 % of cancer deaths for women worldwide. These extracts kill cancer cells but not normal cells, Cisneros-Zevallos said.
Byrne plans to examine in detail the lines of the varieties that have been tested to see how these compounds may be incorporated in its pursuit of plum and peach breeding. Cisneros-Zevallos will continue to test these extracts and compounds in different types of cancer and to conduct further studies on the molecular mechanisms involved.
Cisneros-Zevallos, a food scientist, AgriLife Research, said the team compared normal cells with two types of breast cancer, including the most aggressive type. The cells were treated with an extract from two commercial varieties, the rich lady fishing and Black Beauty plum.
Byrne and Dr. Luis Cisneros-Zevallos first studied the antioxidants and phytonutrients in plums and found to meet or exceed the blueberries that had been considered superior to other fruits of these categories.
The work documents the health benefits of stone fruit has been supported by the Center for vegetables and fruits to improve the Texas A & M University, the U. S. Department of Agriculture and the California Tree Fruit Agreement.
It was a differential effect which is what you want because in the treatment of cancer with chemotherapy today, the substance kills all cells, so it’s really hard on the body, said Dr. David Byrne, AgriLife Research plant breeder, who studied stone fruit. Here, there is a difference of five times the intensity can be toxic to a level where you destroy the cancer cells -. The very aggressive and not normal
So it’s very, very interesting from the standpoint of being an alternative to conventional chemotherapy kills normal cells and cancer, said Byrne.
Both compounds are very common in fruits, the researchers said, but the fruits of stone like the plum and peach have particularly high levels.
The next step was to choose some of these antioxidant commercial varieties and study their anticancer properties, Cisneros-Zevallos said. And we chose breast cancer as a target, because it is one of the cancers with highest incidence among women. It ‘very worrying.
A closer examination of the extracts determined that two specific components of phenolic acids – chlorogenic and neochlorogenic – were responsible for killing cancer cells without affecting normal cells, Cisneros-Zevallos said.
