‘Identification of individual care is the key that opens the e-health for Australians. The future potential of personal health records (EHR) will give health workers better access to patient information and improve information sharing among health care workers, leading to better care for patients.
Dr Caroline Johnson, who is part of the quality of care Quality RACGP National RACGP representative on the association of mental health professionals ‘(MHPA) and a general practitioner, said that patient confidentiality is a very sensitive issue in the mental health field.
To ensure that general practitioners can provide the highest standard of standard of care to their patients, the RACGP is to ensure that the Authority Transitional National E-Health (nehtë) is aware of what is reasonable practical and useful for GPs when leading the progression of e-health in Australia. Nehtë is the lead agency to support the national vision for e-health in Australia.
‘Patients with mental illness are part of a vulnerable’ at risk ‘group and we believe that the quality of care can be improved with the introduction of a national e-health infrastructure.
‘Everyone in Australia should receive care that is informed by a summary of medical records. The passage of the bill of health identifiers 2010 is an essential step to enable e-health innovation and efficiency,’ said Mitchell.
‘In situations where the patient is in difficulty or confusion, for example, emergency hospital, in a hurry to get accurate information on a patient with e-health could lead to better results,’ said Mr. Johnson.
‘A summary of medicine consolidated, as shall be provided with e-health system, will allow the doctor to see if the drug has been modified and lead to a better outcome for the patient with all care providers to access the same information ‘he said.
‘The awareness of consumers and health professionals is essential.
RACGP members are well aware of the sensitivities regarding the use and access to diagnostic labels in this area.
Dr Chris Mitchell, RACGP President and GP in northern New South Wales said that the process of linking information for the GP is very important.
The impact of mental health within the Australian population is high, with twenty per cent of Australian adults suffer from some form of mental disorder every year, and general practitioners are often the first point of contact.
